After the album: what you need to know about mastering tracks
The artist and producer get the glory, but what can make or break a record is a good mastering engineer! If you've ever recorded and mixed a song, EP or album and wondered why it doesn't quite sound like your favorite records, that could be mastering. It's the final step in the process of making music sound great sonically.
And not all mastering engineers are the same. It's an art. Good mastering engineers are difficult to find, but when you do...WOW! They have the ability to reign in every piece of the musical puzzle and somehow make it all fit perfectly. They use specialized gear that allows them to fit each instrument into their correct sonic space.
This blog is a very simple explanation of what mastering engineers do, but hopefully you get an idea of their talent. Maybe it will even inspire you to play around with your final mixes a bit more. So the next time you're listening to your favorite song or record, take a look at the credits and see who's mastering. I bet you will start finding a pattern.
Until next time...
